Bareboat charters in St Thomas

Question 1

What is a bareboat charter?

Accepted Answer

A bareboat charter in St Thomas gives you exclusive use of a vessel with no crew, placing all operational duties — navigation, anchoring, docking, fueling, and safety — entirely on you. To qualify, you must hold a valid, internationally recognized skipper's license that complies with local laws. If you lack the required credentials or experience, you can easily hire a professional local captain through our platform to handle the vessel for you.

Question 2

Do I need a license for a bareboat charter in St Thomas?

Accepted Answer

Bareboat licensing requirements depend strictly on your destination's local maritime laws, vessel type, and engine power. While highly regulated regions like the Mediterranean mandate accredited certifications (such as an ICC, IPC, or RYA Day Skipper) and a VHF radio license, areas like the Caribbean typically accept a verified boating resume instead. Because regulations and fleet insurance policies vary globally, we recommend sending your qualifications to our team before booking so we can coordinate with the operator to verify them with local port authorities.

Question 3

What is the difference between bareboat charter and skippered charter?

Accepted Answer

A bareboat charter in St Thomas means you rent the vessel alone and handle all navigation, docking, and safety duties yourself, which requires a valid license and sufficient experience. A skippered charter includes a professional captain who manages the boat, handles maritime safety, and plans local routes, making it the ideal choice if you lack the required credentials or simply prefer a stress-free experience on unfamiliar waters.

Question 4

Are bareboat charters available for one day?

Accepted Answer

Yes, but availability depends heavily on the vessel class. Day rentals in St Thomas are widely available for smaller motorboats, rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), and day-cruisers, which are perfectly optimized for quick coastal runs. Conversely, larger sailing yachts and luxury catamarans generally require multi-day or Saturday-to-Saturday weekly minimums due to deep-cleaning protocols, comprehensive check-in orientations, and fleet insurance constraints.

Question 5

What is included in a bareboat charter?

Accepted Answer

A bareboat charter in St Thomas provides the vessel, essential safety and navigation gear, and sometimes a dinghy, but leaves operational expenses entirely to you. You are responsible for out-of-pocket costs such as fuel, overnight marina fees, port taxes, and the final post-charter cleaning. A mandatory refundable security deposit or insurance bond is also required at check-in to cover the vessel's hull deductible. Always review your selected boat's profile for an exact line-by-line breakdown of inclusions and extras before finalizing your dates.

Question 6

Do bareboat charters require a security deposit?

Accepted Answer

Yes. A refundable security deposit is universally required prior to departure to cover the vessel's insurance excess (deductible) for any hull damage, lost equipment, or un-reformed fuel deficits incurred during your command. The deposit amount corresponds directly to the total value of the vessel and selected insurance tier. This amount is typically authorized as a temporary hold on your credit card at the base marina and is fully released upon a successful post-charter inspection.

Question 7

Can beginners book a bareboat charter?

Accepted Answer

Generally, no. Bareboat charters in St Thomas are reserved for certified mariners who can manage navigation, docking, and shifting currents. The only exception applies to ultra-compact, low-horsepower motorboats (such as license-free RIBs or day-boats) operated within strictly designated, shallow, and protected coastal zones where local laws permit it. For all standard sailing yachts, catamarans, and high-performance motor vessels, hiring a professional captain through our platform is mandatory if you lack formal licensing.

Question 8

What happens if the boat is damaged during a bareboat charter?

Accepted Answer

If damage occurs in St Thomas under your command, costs are initially deducted from your security deposit or covered via the vessel's hull insurance, depending on the fault assessment and your charter agreement. To protect yourself from liability for pre-existing issues, you must conduct a thorough, line-by-line check-in inspection with the base manager before departure, documenting any current wear or damage on the official check-in manifest.

Question 9

Can we hire a skipper for a bareboat charter?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If you have found the ideal vessel but prefer not to handle the navigation, docking, or anchoring yourself in St Thomas, you can easily add a professional local captain to your booking. Skipper services are highly flexible, available for a single day, specific intervals, or the entire duration of your charter. Simply select the captain add-on during checkout to secure a certified mariner who will manage all onboard logistics and local port compliances.

Question 10

Are fuel costs included in bareboat charters?

Accepted Answer

No, fuel is typically excluded from bareboat charters in St Thomas. You will generally receive the vessel with a full tank and are expected to return it at the same level, or you will be charged for the exact amount consumed during your trip. Always check your selected boat's specific fuel policy before booking, as terms vary by operator.
